Fast Trains for Granville & Lidcombe

The 2017 timetable removed T1 Western Line express trains from Granville and Lidcombe, with services replaced by the slower T2 Parramatta Line. The 2024 timetable is a missed opportunity to restore T1 Western Line express trains for Granville and Lidcombe.

The “Schofields” Plan

Note: Express trains (T1 Western Line) was removed from Granville and Lidcombe (especially in peak) in the 2017 timetable. The T2 Parramatta (Inner West) Line is the slow train that prevents the T1 Western Line (express trains) from servicing Granville and Lidcombe.

Sydney Morning Herald reporting on 2024 timetable (17 September 2024)

“16 trains per hour between Lidcombe and Circular Quay in the peak periods”

The Inner West Line has capacity for 4 additional trains per hour from Lidcombe to City Circle as each line group can operate 20 trains per hour. Were the T6 Bankstown & Lidcombe line shuttle be extended from Lidcombe to City Circle using the capacity for the 4 additional trains on the Inner West Line, the T2 Leppington Line and/or T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line would be able to have fewer stops.

Extending the T6 Line from Lidcombe to City Circle is the restoration of the Inner West Line from Bankstown to City via Regents Park (also removed in the 2013 timetable)

Fast Track Signalling Upgrades for Sydney Trains

We urge the NSW Government to prioritise investment into the Sydney Trains Network through the Digital Systems Program (DSP). This program achieves the most cost-effective uplift to capacity for Sydney Trains and can be implemented with minimal disruption to existing services.

The Digital Systems Program (using European Train Control Management Level 2) will enable a train every 2 minutes on the T4 Illawarra Line and T8 Airport Line (at a cost of $800 million for the T4 and T8 lines compared to billions in converting existing rail lines into Sydney Metro).

oward Collins (former Sydney Trains Chief Executive) said a digital upgrade of the signalling system would be the “biggest improvement we can make to the capacity of this city in a very short space of time”.

We are concerned at the slow pace of the rollout of the Digital Systems Program and urges the NSW Government to fast track this project for Sydney Trains including lines without a direct connection to Central.
