Rail West of Bankstown Update 7 September 2023

Major win for Liverpool via Regents Park commuters, but major cuts coming for Birrong and Yagoona in the 2024 timetable.

Following the NSW Government announcement (6 September 2023) to keep stations open in the West of Bankstown when Sydney Metro Southwest (Sydenham – Bankstown) opens, we have updated the status of future rail services in the West of Bankstown area.

We await confirmation from the NSW Government regarding the long-term future of rail in the West of Bankstown in the 2030s as Transport for NSW has given consideration to again removing the City to Liverpool via Regents Park service and replacing trains with bus.

From the information currently available from Transport for NSW, the 2024 timetable will be introduced in mid-July 2024 when Sydenham to Bankstown is temporarily closed for Sydney Metro Southwest construction.

The 2024 timetable is also the Day 1 timetable at the opening of Sydney Metro Southwest (Sydenham to Bankstown) in 2025 (following the 12 month temporary shutdown from mid-2024 onwards).

Note: Transport for NSW refers to “City to Liverpool via Regents Park” as part of the T3 Bankstown Line in the 2024 timetable despite Bankstown Station not being included on this route.

The other major change to train services in the West of Bankstown arising from the 2024 timetable is the removal of direct trains between Liverpool and Bankstown. The southern side of the Sefton Junction will not operate passenger services forcing commuters to interchange at Regents Park.

Transport for NSW has announced more cuts to Sydney Trains in the West of Bankstown including removal of direct trains between Liverpool and Bankstown with new interchanges at Regents Park and Bankstown.

Travel times to increase. For example: Chester Hill to Canterbury will become 3 separate trains. Currently 1 direct train (26 minutes), but from 2024 train to Regents Park interchange then train to Bankstown interchange then Metro to Canterbury (at least 49 minutes).
